Honest answers to hard questions
Why would I earn double — where's the trick? The honest answer
No trick — it's the same units at retail instead of wholesale. Selling wholesale, a store buys at ~50% of retail and the wholesale channel takes its commission, so you net ~42% of retail. On PlaceUp the shopper pays full retail and you keep 65%, because the store never buys your stock — it hosts it and earns 25% only when something sells. You carry a small batch you own, which is exactly why you keep the premium.
Wholesale pays me on order, you pay only if it sellsThe honest answer
True — that's the honest trade. Wholesale pays up front because the store took the inventory risk and paid wholesale for it. Here you keep ownership and get paid when your product sells to a real shopper, after a short return window. You trade a guaranteed lower amount for a larger amount on what actually sells — on a small batch you control.
What if it doesn't sell? The honest answer
It's a small batch you still own. Restock only what sells; pull the rest anytime. For founding brands, if a placement doesn't work in 90 days we ship your stock back at our cost — so a slow shelf costs you shipping, not inventory.
My product comes in cases — do I have to break them up?The honest answer
No. If you sell small items, ship a refillable display box: set your box size (say 24) when you add the product, and we merchandise it as the display and restock it box by box as it sells. Shoppers still buy one item at its retail price — the box is just how your stock ships and refills, never a wholesale case or a bulk price.
What volume are we really talking about? The honest answer
Honestly, about 10–20 units per shelf per month for a product that fits the store — not hundreds. That's why we start you at 10 units per store and grow with real sell-through data, not a big purchase order. The calculator above uses believable numbers on purpose.
My products are cheap — does the math work? The honest answer
At low price points the multiple is smaller but still in your favor — roughly 1.4–1.5× what the same units net via wholesale, before production cost in both cases. If your item is only a few dollars the absolute dollars are modest; PlaceUp works best when your retail price gives the 65% something to work with.
When do I get paid? The honest answer
After each sale clears your product's return window — you set the policy, and final-sale items pay out immediately. Refunds reverse the split proportionally. PlaceUp collects and remits sales tax on every sale, so you don't.
Who eats returns, theft, tax?The honest answer
Returns come out of the held funds for that sale and reverse the split proportionally — no phantom charges. Every purchase is verified at the door and monthly stock counts flag gaps early. Sales tax is PlaceUp's job — we collect and remit it, not you.
Is this proven?The honest answer
Consignment retail is decades old — brands have always earned more by keeping ownership. What's new is the scan-to-pay QR shelf and the sell-through data, and that's exactly what the Fort Lauderdale pilot proves. That's why founding brands get enhanced terms and guarantees while we prove it together.
